On August 28, 2012, the Organizing Committee of the 5th (China) World Economic and Environmental Conference 2012 (the 5th WEC) held the press conference and release activities of the 1st batch of winners of the 2nd International Carbon-Value Award.
The 5th WEC is co-organized by United Nations Industrial Development Organization, United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and International Energy Conservation Environmental Protection Association (IEEPA), and supported by United Nations Development Program (UNDP), World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF), International Solar Energy Society (ISES), Euro50 Group, UNAPCAEM, European Wind Energy Association, University of Nottingham of UK, Canada China Business Council, foreign embassies in China; The main attendees of the press conference are officials from NPC, CPPCC, the State Council, presidium members, news media, international organizations and foreign embassies in China and so on.
The press conference included four agenda: 1. press conference of the 5th WEC; 2. release of the 1st batch of winners of the 2nd International Carbon-Value Award; 3. forum on "green power leading economic development"; 4. cooperative and development workshop for IEEPA observers.

Edward Clarence-Smith, Co-Secretary-General of the Organizing Committee of the 5th WEC, Chairman Representative of UNIDO in China, introduced the preparatory work of the 5th WEC, and announced on behalf of the Organizing Committee to the news media and attendees that the Organizing Committee of the 5th WEC, determined to postpone the opening ceremony of the 5th WEC to November 16-18, 2012 in Beijing after making positive response to consultative advices of leaders of WEC presidia.
It is reported that over 100 VIP guests will be invited to attend the 5th WEC in November. As an international summit in economic and environmental fields, the conference will offer precious referential remarks on green, low carbon and sustainable development for both China and the world, and the white paper will be drafted after the conference.
Edmond Alphandéry, Director-General on duty of IEEPA Consultative Committee, Chairman of Euro50 Group, Former French Finance Minister indicated in his speech that he was delighted to attend the press conference as the Director-General on duty of IEEPA Consultative Committee for the first time, and his organization Euro50 Group would support the conference, at the same time, he praised the efforts made by UNIDO, IEEPA and UNESCO.
Jon Li, Co-Executive Secretary-General of the 5th WEC, IEEPA Secretary-General, hosted the press conference, and he pointed out: This conference will further discuss and study major issues during China's economic transition, and put forward corresponding measures and advices. Founded in 2008, WEC as an international environmental-protection brand focuses not only green and low-carbon development, but opportunity and challenge enterprises are facing while access to Chinese market; We shall attach importance to the role of non-government forces, encourage them to participate in environmental protection undertaking under the support of government, further guide more enterprises and entrepreneurs to join in, with a view to forming more professional and stronger forces.
The Organizing Committee also announced the first batch of winners of the second International Carbon-Value Award. Unilever China Ltd. and Inner Mongolia Yili Group, which won the subawards of International Carbon-Value Award in 2011 respectively, became the final winners of the award this year for the sake of their unremitting and extraordinary efforts; Other winners included US Applied Material and Baidu Corp. (Carbon-Value Innovative Value Award), Industrial Bank Corp. and Qinghai Jason Group (Carbon-Value Ecological Practice Award), and China Everbright International Ltd. is the first enterprise which won China Green-Benefit Enterprise Award. Currently, analysis and appraisal work are being carried out for the second batches of enterprise candidates including Ingersoll Rand, Johnson & Johnson, Volvo Group, ENN GROUP, Chartered Bank, Foxconn Technology Group. Besides, the appraisal and selection of the winners of "China Green-Carbon City Award" are also around the corner, and Hangzhou, Yantai and Guangyuan have entered the final round list. This award aims to appraise and select a city with the largest potential of green and low-carbon development, with the capacity of building into an international demonstration city of green and low-carbon cooperation.
"China Green-Benefit Enterprise Award", as the first one set up by WEC, aims to carry out investigation and analysis on enterprise candidates, especially for emerging and developing enterprises with certain competitive edge, and having obtained certain green benefit; select and award enterprises which have put green mission and social responsibility as priority, and have the potential or capacity to become social pilot enterprises in terms of "green benefit". China Everbright International Ltd is the first enterprise which won this award. Besides, the enterprise winners present in the meeting included Everbight International, BAC Ltd., Unilever, Inner Mongolia Yili, UPM-Kymmene Group, ERM Environmental Co., Chung Sung Auto, Volvo, Taiwan Daai, New World China Land Limited and so on.
Concerning International Carbon-Value Award, the appraisal and selection activities will be performed by the jury of international agencies, industry organizations, economists, sociologists and famous media and so on. Via questionnaire, social investigation, appraisal by experts and media, the organizer will seek and select the best players of "carbon transformation action, carbon development efficiency and carbon social value", who will serve as practitioners, pilots and models, together with us, jointly push forward human's ecological process.
It is reported that the appraisal and selection of the second International Carbon-Value Award are divided into two periods: the first period is from July 31 to August 28, and the second is from September 30 to October 16, and the awarding ceremony will be held together with dinner party during the period of the 5th WEC.
The 5th WEC is scheduled to be held from November 16-18, 2012. As an international summit, WEC has been held successfully for four times, attracting altogether 3,000 guests from over 40 countries and regions.
