Environmental progress includes 5% reduction in water use, 3% reduction in energy use

DENVER & MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Molson Coors Brewing Company today announced it has issued its 2011 online corporate responsibility report, reporting on its performance in five key areas: Governance and Ethics, Alcohol Responsibility, Environmental Stewardship, Employees and Community, and Responsible Sourcing.

"I am proud of our business performance last year, and that includes our efforts to work in a smarter, more efficient and sustainable manner. We measure our sustainability results against targets, just as we do with every other driver of our business," said Molson Coors president and CEO Peter Swinburn. "We seek continuous improvement across all areas of our corporate responsibility. We also have increased our focus on water, community and alcohol responsibility, the areas identified by our stakeholders as most critical to them."

Performance Highlights:

  • Positive trend in 2010 environmental impact: Five percent reduction in water use and three percent reduction in energy use. Reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 14 percent since 2008 baseline.
  • Continued progress in employee engagement: Annual survey saw scores above the norm for high performing companies. The survey identified corporate responsibility as a top five driver of engagement. 89 percent believe the company was responsible in the community, 85 percent believe the company was environmentally responsible. Launched Our Beer Print to educate employees about corporate responsibility and how they can impact the company's Beer Print through direct actions.
  • Further implemented global strategy on water: Conducted detailed risk assessments of all breweries. Setting up stakeholder forums to address local challenges and opportunities with other water users. Continued sponsorship of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Water Disclosure to provide critical water data from the world's largest companies.
  • Embedded corporate responsibility into global procurement process: Together with MillerCoors, joined Sedex, an independent organization for businesses committed to continuously improving the ethical performance of their supply chains. Significant step to ensure suppliers adhere to Responsible Sourcing Principles. Target: roll out Sedex to top 100 suppliers over next three years.

Sustainable Watershed Management

As part of the company's commitment to water stewardship, Molson Coors sponsored the Water Disclosure Project for a second year. Molson Coors, along with 175 of the world's largest companies, provides critical data on its water use in an effort to set meaningful standards to help address global issues of water quality and scarcity.

"We've been brewing beer for generations. Over the years, we've become experts in managing complex water issues. We believe we can make a significant difference by sharing that expertise with our brewing partners and local communities, our suppliers and other water stakeholders," said Bart Alexander, chief corporate responsibility officer for Molson Coors.

To that end, the company leads local watershed forums and engages its employees in watershed volunteer activities, with heightened activities around its annual global Water Stewardship month in September. In June 2011, Molson Coors held the first meeting of the Tadcaster River Wharfe Community Users Group in the U.K. By developing partnerships and sharing best practices, the group works to mitigate short and long-term risk and ensure the river can be enjoyed by all.

Molson Coors Canada was a national sponsor for the 2010 Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (GCSH) in partnership with WWF Canada and the Vancouver Aquarium. During a week in September, thousands of Canadians take time to rehabilitate their local shorelines through the removal of shoreline litter. Molson Coors employees joined volunteers in Halifax, St. John's NFLD, Toronto, Ottawa, St. Albert's, and Vancouver. Together, 47,000 volunteers cleaned up 98,000 kg of litter from the shorelines of Canada.

"The more we listen, the more we learn. Tell us if you think we have our priorities right, and let us know where you think we can do better. We welcome your feedback," said Alexander.
