IAA 2011Car Connectivity Consortium Summit

FRANKFURT, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), an organization driving global innovation for phone-centric car connectivity solutions, today announced the launch of its MirrorLinkTM trademark. MirrorLink offers global solutions for connecting mobile devices to in-vehicle infotainment systems, allowing unprecedented functionality through two-way links between smartphones and in-vehicle displays.

The consortium, now represented by roughly 60% of the world's automobile market share and 60% of the world's smartphone market share, will conduct its first Car Connectivity Consortium Summit, September 29-30, 2011, at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. A press conference at the Chicago Summit will unveil standards work and the organization's roadmap for MirrorLink initiatives expected to significantly impact the automotive, mobile communications and consumer electronics industries. The first MirrorLink products will be presented by multiple member companies at the IAA International Motor Show, taking place in Frankfurt, Germany, September 15-25, 2011.

"Seven of the world's leading auto makers and six leading brands from the handset industry have already joined the Car Connectivity Consortium," said Mika Rytkonen, Car Connectivity Consortium President. "These are two very different industries coming together to focus on one common goal - providing an optimal user experience for accessing content while in the car."

"Establishing cooperation between the automotive and mobile communications industries enables the best of both worlds, combining advanced smartphone applications with auto testing and certification," said Alfred Tom, Car Connectivity Consortium Ecosystem Workgroup Chair. "We know that 70 percent of all new car customers want some form of connectivity. The great news is that we have the technology to allow consumers to use this connectivity safely and simply, keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. CCC will help standardize these technologies and make them widespread throughout the industry."

The CCC's Terminal Mode 1.0.1 standard has been renamed MirrorLinkTM 1.0.1 as part of the Car Connectivity Consortium's new trademark branding. MirrorLink provides in-vehicle mobile device adaptation for an enhanced interactive multi-modal experience using two-way communication between the vehicle's in-dash display and applications running on the smartphone. By leveraging the MirrorLink open solution, in-car systems such as digital displays, audio systems and steering wheel buttons can seamlessly connect to the driver or passenger's mobile device. The Car Connectivity Consortium will focus on developing MirrorLink solutions that allow use of mobile applications in a safe and effective manner throughout the automotive product space by providing guidelines, certification, interoperability testing and branding opportunities for future products.
