Stakeholders of knowledge gather at World Science Forum in Budapest, Hungary for the fifth time
World Science Forum 2011
BUDAPEST, Hungary--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The fifth World Science Forum on 17-19 November in Budapest deals with today's changing landscape of science. The organizers - the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS), UNESCO, the International Council for Science (ICSU), and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences - expect over 500 scientists from more than 100 countries, decision-makers from the world of politics, business, civil society and media for the three-day event.
As the leading biannual event in science diplomacy the Budapest-based World Science Forum has aimed to raise awareness worldwide towards the increasing responsibility and new roles of science since its first meeting of 2003. It provides the scientific community and public policy makers with a global platform to exchange, discuss and harmonize their ideas in respect to the growing interdependence of science with society. It also endeavors to promote the need for scientific advice in political decision-making.
The 2011 Forum entitled "The Changing Landscape of Science" focuses on different aspects of today's evolution of science. The appearance of new actors and the rapid growth of the scientific output from emerging economic powers are redrawing the map of the world; new fields and disciplines emerge and the priorities of research alter in line with the burning issues of today's economy and society, such as food supply and emerging infections.
"Our speakers will outline their views on the future of humankind, new challenges caused by, and solutions to remedy global problems. These themes will be presented from the perspectives of both developed and developing countries, giving a balanced view of major global disputes and promoting the interaction between stakeholders of knowledge." - asserted József Pálinkás, President of World Science Forum, President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
HAS is leading a thematic session about one of the most emerging fields of science, the networks at the Forum.
To emphasize the global nature and relevance of the Forum, breaking with the tradition, the upcoming 2013 World Science Forum will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The South-American state contributes to the success of the present Forum as a co-organizer and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences took on a special role in the work of the Steering Committee of WSF.
