Former Deputy Secretary of U.S. Department of Education Brings Broad Experience to Leading International Provider of Measurement and Assessment Tools to Education, Government and Commercial Organizations
EAGAN, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--William D. “Bill” Hansen has been named president of Scantron Corporation. He assumed the top leadership position of the well-known international provider of assessment and survey solutions on July 13. Hansen reports directly to Chuck Dawson, president and chief executive officer of Harland Clarke Holdings Corp., and serves on its Executive Leadership Team. Scantron is a subsidiary of Harland Clarke Holdings.
For more than 30 years, Scantron has helped education, commercial and government organizations worldwide measure and improve effectiveness with assessment and survey solutions. It is best known for its pioneering and exceptional products and services that allow the rapid, accurate and reliable capture of student performance data. Today, approximately 80 percent of schools in the United States use Scantron products. The brand is also visible in 63 countries, with 15 Ministries of Education throughout the world using Scantron scanning solutions for their national assessment programs. Future growth areas include health care, commercial, associations, and travel and leisure industries. Scantron has 1,100 employees located in six facilities nationwide. It is headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota, and has a regional headquarters in Irvine, California.
“Bill Hansen’s three decades of public and private industry experience will be invaluable in this new era of heightened focus on, and government investment in, testing and assessment,” said Ronald O. Perelman, the Chairman of the Board of M & F Worldwide Corp. (NYSE: MFW), Scantron’s ultimate parent company. “His leadership will greatly benefit Scantron’s future growth in both educational and commercial arenas.”
Prior to Scantron, Hansen served as president and chief executive officer of Chartwell Education Group, LLC, an education-related consulting firm headquartered in New York, with offices in Washington, D.C. and London. Prior to joining Chartwell in 2005, he served as the senior vice president and managing director of Fortune 500 company Affiliated Computer Services’ (ACS) Education Services Business. From May 2001 to July 2003, Hansen served our country as the deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, functioning as its chief operating officer. Between 1993 and 2001, he was president of the Education Finance Council, a trade association representing state-based student loan finance organizations. This position was preceded by a dozen years in numerous senior executive positions with the U.S. Department of Education, including assistant secretary for Management and Budget, and chief financial officer.
Hansen’s volunteer efforts reflect his professional positions, spanning both government and private industry. He has served on many voluntary boards and commissions at both the state and national levels, focusing on reforming elementary and secondary schools and increasing access to higher education. He also currently serves as a director on the boards of several finance, technology and education companies, as well as universities and non-profit organizations.
“Scantron has been committed to the critical issue of assessing the effectiveness of educational programs for students for 30 years. It’s been a key focus of mine, as well, during that same period of time,” said Hansen. “Education and assessment are global priorities. Scantron’s own standards of performance have positioned it in a strategic role in this ongoing mission.” Hansen added, “I am also looking forward to working with Chuck Dawson and the executive leaders of the three companies of Harland Clarke Holdings.” Scantron, along with Harland Clarke and Harland Financial Solutions, comprise Harland Clarke Holdings Corp. In 2008, Harland Clarke Holdings generated annual revenues of nearly $1.8 billion.
“There are significant growth opportunities for Scantron resulting from its own strong brand, as well as from the reputation and trust its sister companies have earned in other industries,” said Dawson. “Both Ronald and I know that Bill Hansen will be a major contributor to our company’s success.”
