SANTA CLARA, Calif.--()--Members of the Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) are to test multi-gigabit wireless WiGig technology in real world conditions this week in a move taking the technology ever closer to commercialization.
The second WiGig Plugfest will run for four days and establish the basis for future interoperability of different products. It signals the imminent transition of ultra-fast 60GHz WiGig networking into actual products realized on the market.
Gartner Wireless Research Director Mark Hung commented: “WiGig addresses the increasing consumer demand for high-speed wireless communication in the home, enterprise, and mobile markets. With the latest WiGig Alliance plugfest, an ecosystem of interoperable WiGig-enabled products is starting to emerge to meet this demand. The first category of products expected to implement WiGig technology will be PCs and peripherals.”
This Plugfest follows the publication in 2011 of three Protocol Adaptation Layer (PAL) specifications, the WiGig Display Extension (WDE), the WiGig Serial Extension (WSE) and WiGig Bus Extension (WBE). WiGig members are now testing their WiGig-based products to ensure interoperability within the ecosystem and provide end users with a guarantee of highly reliable solutions at product launch next year.

The Plugfest is being organized in collaboration with UL CCS and assisted by MET Labs, two of the world’s leading independent compliance, testing and certification houses engaged with the WiGig Alliance since the organisation began. Key test instrumentation for the Plugfest is being provided by Agilent Technologies and Rohde and Schwarz.
