LEICESTER, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A De Montfort University (DMU) graduate from Hong Kong has designed innovative storage which was showcased at the prestigious New Designers exhibition in London on 16-19 July.

Rosetta Lau, 22, designed the products as part of her BA (Hons) Furniture Design degree at DMU in Leicester, UK.

New Designers brings together over 3,500 graduating students from across the UK, showcasing their talent to the industry and helping them launch their careers.

One of Rosetta’s designs, the PlusMinus wall, is a partition system created in response to her own experiences of living within compact environments in Hong Kong.

Rosetta focused on maximising storage by utilising the space within a shower partition – inside each section of the frame there are options to leave open space or to fit shelves, mirrors, or hanging rails.

The functions that produce an indent on one side generate a flat panel or mirror on the other. There is also an optional sink and the potential for a complete wall of mirrors.

Realising its potential for commercial application such as in hotels, Rosetta said: “The number of subdivisions can be reduced in certain areas to produce wall panelling or mirrors. This would be more appropriate for contract environments which don’t need as much facility for storage.”

Another of her furniture designs provides temporary storage for regularly used items, especially for organising the everyday things which we bring home and which are delivered to our homes.

Her research showed that a significant amount of stress and wasted time results from people’s lack of organisation with keys, phones mail, bills etc.

Rosetta, who graduated with an upper second class (2:1) degree at the University’s graduation ceremony on Monday 13 July, added: “Using this system becomes part of the ritual of leaving and arriving home. It includes containers for keys, wallets, mobile phones plus storage aids such as letter trays and integral hooks for hanging coats.

“The units can be located almost anywhere, typically a hallway, and can be fixed in a wide variety of configurations.”

You can find out more about studying at DMU at the Education UK Exhibition on 22-23 August 2009. The event will take place at the China Resources Building on Harbour Road in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, from 1-7pm each day.
