SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) --
SPMT, LLC, the entity responsible for licensing the Serial Port Memory Technology (SPMTTM) specification and administering the SPMT Consortium, today announced the availability of an abridged specification for Serial Port Memory Technology. This specification is being made available to allow members of the mobile industry the ability to review the general technical merits of the technology prior to becoming an adopter. The abridged specification can be accessed at http://www.spmt.org. The full SPMT specification, scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2009, will be made available only to SPMT adopters.
Serial Port Memory Technology is the first-of-its-kind technology for dynamic random access memory (DRAM) capable of delivering the bandwidth flexibility and scalability required by new generations of mobile devices, all at significantly reduced pin count, low power consumption and lower cost. The technology will initially target the mobile handset market, enabling a new generation of devices capable of running highly data intensive, media-rich applications while at the same time extending battery life. Consortium founding members are ARM, Hynix Semiconductor, Inc., LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Silicon Image, Inc.
"The release of the SPMT abridged specification marks a significant milestone in preparing Serial Port Memory Technology for broad market adoption among manufacturers of handset, gaming, netbooks and other mobile devices," said Jim Venable, president of SPMT, LLC. "Going from a parallel interface to a serial interface is recognized by the mobile industry as the next evolution for memory and the SPMT Consortium is at the forefront leading the way."
The SPMT Consortium welcomes inquiries from companies and organizations interested in joining the group. Opportunities to participate in the advancement of Serial Port Memory Technology exist for contributors and adopters. For more information about Serial Port Memory Technology, the benefits of SPMT membership, information about membership fees as well as an application to join, please visit http://www.spmt.org.
