QUITO, Ecuador--(BUSINESS WIRE)--For the first time in the democratic history of Ecuador, official results were announced in one hour after polls closed. This was only possible in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, the province in which electronic voting solution was implemented using Smartmatic technology.
“The elections in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas proved that electronic voting –when implemented nationally- will provide all Ecuadorians with a secure, fast and trustworthy vote,” said Antonio Mugica, CEO for Smartmatic.
In order to test different technologies available, the Consejo Nacional Electoral de Ecuador (CNE) used Smartmatic technology to automate the elections of the Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas province.
“The electronic voting implemented in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, on top of being secure, is particularly voter friendly. This technology has been successfully deployed in hundreds of elections worldwide. That was one of the reasons this e-voting pilot was a success,” explained Alfredo Paredes, Project Manager for the CNE.
Key facts about the election
- At 8:27 am, voting had started in 100% of precincts.
- Only 60 minutes after polls closed, the CNE was able to announce the official results with 99% of transmission.
- Besides providing the technology, Smartmatic offered a suite of integrated services to guarantee the success of the pilot. Services included: operating a support center; configuring the voting machines; defining, planning and executing the training plan for both the electorate and the staff; preparing, deploying and collecting the electronic electoral kits; among other services.
- During the days preceding the elections, authorities organized three simulations in 10 poll centers in Santo Domingo de Tsáchilas. These tests encompassed voting and data transmission, and involved the participation of actual voters, political parties, CNE technicians and Smartmatic personnel.
