The ongoing collision of broadcast with IP has been the biggest fundamental development in the history of the industry, impacting the entire value chain across the creation, management and distribution of content. Thursday’s conference sessions will examine where we are in the process, and consider the crucially important issue of spectrum allocation. New technologies are presenting new opportunities for monetisation, with targeted ads and real-time bidding systems opening up. Sessions also look at innovations in news production, and consider the future of rolling news channels.

Friday 12 September

Theme: Embracing Change. Technology enabling new opportunities & new challenges

Technological change has accelerated over the past decade and it shows no sign of slowing down, impacting every stage of the production workflow. The list of disruptors is long and rapidly evolving. Tapeless workflows have given birth to significant cloud-based collaboration and production opportunities, while the companion screen has become an integral part of an increasingly genuine transmedia production and distribution model. Ultra HD is looming large and becoming an important component of IPTV strategies. Friday’s conference sessions will assess the future of technology and the impacts it may have.

The march of the digital content players has been astonishing, raising the spectre of cord cutting as a host of new players seeks to enter a burgeoning market for on-demand content. These sessions will look at the changing roles of content producers, aggregators, service providers, and the potential for disruption to the business models and plans of the established order. Opportunities to exploit the potential of big data will be examined, while a session considers innovations stemming from the Winter Olympics and this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

Sunday 14 September

Theme: Preparing for the Future. Understanding the nature of possible disruption

Broadcasters, platform operators and others are devising new services, changing the nature of their existing relationships with advertising, and offering more immersive multiplatform viewing experiences. New technologies are presenting new opportunities for monetisation, with tagged ads and real-time bidding systems for advertising slots opening up as broadcasters learn to leverage the power of the return path. But engaging with the viewer in an increasingly untethered and multiscreen world remains a challenge. This day’s future-facing sessions will seek to guide delegates through the newly blended world, where TV becomes even more social and reality is augmented.
