HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--KBR (NYSE:KBR) will be part of the team unveiling the design for the world’s longest marine causeway, the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway. The project will be showcased this Sunday, November 22, at the Bridges Middle East Conference, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
As Programme Manager, KBR is responsible for management of the design and construction on behalf of the client, the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Foundation, while the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Consortium is the design/build contractor. All parties are presenting at the conference.
When completed, this multi-modal connection of approximately 40 km between Bahrain and Qatar will feature a two-lane dual carriageway, including 17 km of embankments and a further 23 km of viaducts and bridges, with two bow-string arch bridges soaring up to 40 m above shipping channels. The scheme includes the infrastructure to support freight and high-speed rail passenger traffic. It is envisioned that the railway will connect Kuwait to Oman, to become the main rail link for the Arabian Gulf countries.
"KBR is honored to have been selected as the Programme Manager for this significant bi-national transportation infrastructure project – one of our biggest infrastructure projects – and we are looking forward to showcasing our plans at the Bridges Middle East Conference," said Colin Elliott, KBR’s President, Infrastructure and Minerals. "I am confident that KBR’s partnership with the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Foundation (QBCF) and our unwavering commitment to our client and the project will see the successful completion of this long-awaited infrastructure."
In November 2008, the QBCF awarded KBR the contract to provide design management, project management, and construction management services for the Qatar-Bahrain road and rail marine crossing. The QBCF is a bi-national institution created in 2006 by the Emir of Qatar and the King of Bahrain to develop and manage the causeway project.
