Billboard Radio Chinahosts Jenny Xand Cavo recently caught up with the King of Chinese Pop, Eason Chan to discuss his new album ‘Getting Ready’ which is currently topping the various Chinese charts. The interviews are available in Mandarin and English. Along the way he opens up about his own influences as a child in Hong Kong listening to cartoons and TV show themes, plus greats like Anita Mui and Alan Tam. He also spoke at length about his formative years in the U.K. at boarding school and University, where he began acting and singing in the choir. It may surprise his longtime fans that among his biggest musical influences are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and ABBA!

Over the course of the almost hour long interview Chan also discusses his return to Hong Kong and whimsical entry into a local singing competition in 1995 for the fee of $50 HKD. ‘I won it, and here I am twenty years later talking to you about my new album’. He says.

Some of his biggest thrills? Meeting, and then becoming friends with Jacky Cheung ranks high among them. ‘One day you’re at an awards show and you can’t believe he’s even saying your name, and then you’re playing tennis with him. It’s bizarre.’

Over the years Eason Chan has been widely regarded as having tried many stylistic musical experiments, and admits regret that he hasn’t delved into Heavy Metal…yet! He also speaks at length about his admiration of Li Ronghao as the most promising new singer/songwriter in Chinese music. So much so that he sought him out for a private meeting in Beijing.

When asked about his new all-Cantonese album ‘Getting Ready’ on Universal Music, he describes it as, ‘An Old School Canto Pop album. It’s almost all ballad-y tempo and the producers I worked with are all old friends who I’ve worked with over the years.’

And the production style? ‘Also old school.’

They must have done something right, as the first two singles, ‘Unconditional’ and ‘Starting Terminal’ have both been Billboard Radio China chart toppers. The album looks poised to be a big one and add more accolades onto his already illustrious career.

Don’t miss this intimate conversation with Canto Pop’s biggest star!
