Robust Solution to Enable HD Performance and Consumer Experience Testing

LAS VEGAS -- (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Simplay Labs, LLC, the leading solutions provider of technologies, testing programs, development tools, and interoperability and performance design standards for the high-definition (HD) consumer electronics industry, today announced it will be demonstrating the new Simplay Universal Test System (UTS) platform at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, January 7-10, 2010. To meet its testing needs, Simplay has chosen PXI products and reconfigurable I/O (RIO) technology from National Instruments. PXI is an open, industry-standard automated test platform based on high-performance PC technology and a software-defined architecture. It provides the industry's highest data bandwidth and lowest latency with modular I/O from high-resolution DC to 26.5 GHz RF measurements.

UTS is a multi-technology and human behavior scoring test tool solution that will enable all HDMI® features performance and consumer experience testing, including features defined in the current HDMI Specification Version 1.4.

The continued growth of HD-enabled devices and the complexity of new HD features across multiple technologies such as wireless, TCP/IP, home networking and HDMI require new product quality testing techniques and approaches. As HD consumer electronics (CE) products become more complex, product quality metrics are evolving from simple single standards support to the more complex "use case" support. Consumers see value when all the products deliver the promised experience without having to worry about the complexity of the system and network set-up, or technologies interoperability and features performance.

"The Universal Test System's modular design and integrated human-perception modeling technologies allows testing and service organizations to customize the solution for their specific requirements as well as add test functions as needed," said Joseph Lias, president of Simplay Labs. "In working with industry leader National Instruments we're leveraging the strengths of both companies to deliver a powerful new testing platform that will change the dynamics of Quality of Experience testing."

The UTS exploits leading edge research in the areas of Human Audio/Visual System (HAVS) models and algorithms as a core component of the Consumer Experience scoring mechanism. The platform also makes use of industry standard shelf and controller technologies to ensure an open platform for evolving HD technologies testing.

With nearly 1,500 products from more than 70 vendors, PXI has become the industry standard for automated test and measurement applications. "We are excited to work with Simplay Labs as they develop their Universal Test System on the PXI platform," said Michael Schneider, group manager of market development at National Instruments. "The high data bandwidth and modularity of PXI make it ideal for HDMI testing and will enable the addition of new capabilities as test requirements evolve."
