CortinaTM's Second Generation EDC Complies to All SFP+ Interfaces Including 10GBase-LRM and Direct Attach Copper
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Cortina Systems, Inc. (Cortina), delivering innovative technologies that link people and networks worldwide, today announced the Cortina Systems® CS4315, which is its second generation 10GE industry enabling Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC) device. The CS4315 EDC is a programmable dual port SFP+ PHY with integrated EDC and processor-enabled SFP+ 10Gbase-SR/LR/LRM, SFP+ Direct Attach, and backplane applications. The CS4315 EDC maximizes data center, server, and switching efficiency with its low power and low latency implementation of the PHY functionality.
With power accounting for 40% of data center operating costs, energy efficiency is critical. The CS4315 EDC has an analog-based architecture that substantially lowers power consumption. Lowering power consumption allows data center managers to maximize the number of servers in their centers. Low power, along with a small physical size, makes the CS4315 EDC an ideal choice for next generation energy efficient and high density data centers.
Another critical area in data centers is latency as it directly affects the transaction speeds, impacting end customer revenues. The CS3415 EDC latency is less than a nanosecond. Data center managers will see negligible physical layer latency with the CS3415 EDC and be able to better utilize their servers.
"Data center managers continually look for ways to increase networking performance while lowering cost, which translates to lowering latency and power," said Scott Feller, product line director at Cortina Systems. "Cortina is seeing increased demand for 10GE PHYS that supports all 10G SFP+ port types including 10Gbase-LRM and Direct Attach Copper. The CS4315 EDC enables single system designs that address the complete spectrum of customer applications."
The CS4315 EDC functionality supports two full duplex 10G links. Both transmit and receive paths include Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) circuits. The CS4315 EDC has a wide operating frequency range covering 1GbE, 1G FC, 2G FC, 4G FC, 8G FC, SONET (9.5 - 11.3G), and 10GbE. Enabling the EDC capability allows the device to operate with linear SFP+ optical modules to support 10Gbase-LRM and Direct Attach Copper. The transmit path includes a 10Gbase-KR compliant 3 tap transmit pre-emphasis capability. The transmit pre-emphasis coupled with the receive EDC enables the device to support 10Gbase-KR, 8G FC and telecom backplane applications. The CS4315 EDC is fully autonomous and does not require external processors to control the initial convergence or the dynamic adaption of the dispersion compensation. In addition, the device includes extensive debug features and I/Os for device monitoring and control.
Applications:
10G SFP+: In an SFP+ application, a single CS4315 EDC performs transmit and receive functionality required to support two SFP+ modules. The device supports all SFP+ port types including: 10GBase-SR, 10GBase-LR, 10GBase-LRM, and Direct Attach Copper. The high quality transmitter of the device enables longer board traces between the MAC and the PHY, which is an essential requirement for new high density designs
Enterprise and Telecom backplanes: The CS4315 EDC 10Gbase-KR compliant 3 tap transmit pre-emphasis and receive equalizer enables 10G transmission over 1m of FR4 in the presence of connectors. In addition, the wide operating frequency range of the device makes it an ideal choice for backplane applications in the 9.95 and 11.3 Gbps range, and 8.5 G fibre channel applications.
Single mode fiber links: The CS4315 EDC can be used in both metro and long haul DWDM systems to compensate for chromatic dispersion and other distortions caused by the transmission medium. The device also includes threshold adjust capability, which is required to achieve optimal performance in a single mode application.
Availability and Pricing:
The CS4315 EDC is in production and shipping in volumes. Pricing is available on request.
CS4315 EDC Demonstration at OFC
Cortina will exhibit at OFC in San Diego, March 22-25 in booth 3125. A live demo of the CS4315 EDC in a 10G backplane application will be showcased.
