WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sidley Austin LLP is pleased to announce the appointment of partners Stanimir Alexandrov and Ing Loong Yang as Global Coordinators of its international commercial and treaty arbitration practice. Sidley’s international arbitration group assists clients with complex, cross-border dispute resolution, and provides global service on arbitrations involving international business disputes. The practice is based in the firm’s Washington, D.C., London, Brussels, Geneva, Hong Kong and Singapore offices.
“International arbitration is one of the most valuable dispute resolution practices for our global clients,” said Charles W. Douglas, chair of the firm’s Management Committee. “We have a team of highly respected professionals who have served as arbitrators and mediators in some of the most complex and high-profile disputes.”
Sidley won the gold award 2010 for the “best U.S. law firm for international arbitration” from the International Legal Alliance, selected by a committee comprised of 14 general counsel of global companies.
Approximately half of Sidley’s 1700 lawyers, worldwide, are involved in dispute resolution practices dealing with regulatory and commercial matters before both national courts and international tribunals, as well as internal investigations. Sidley has a recognized practice in investment treaty arbitration, as well as in international commercial arbitration. The team represents governments and companies from around the globe in investor-state disputes before all the major international arbitral institutions, and have achieved victories for such clients as Vivendi, Cargill, General Electric and Bechtel. The firm’s commercial arbitration lawyers represent clients in connection with all types of commercial disputes before a wide variety of international arbitral forums around the globe.
The two Global Coordinators of the practice, Stanimir Alexandrov and Ing Loong Yang, have practices that complement each other and work closely with the lawyers based in the firm’s various international offices to provide seamless, efficient service to our international clients.
Mr. Alexandrov, who is resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, focuses his practice in the areas of international dispute resolution, including investor-state arbitration and international commercial arbitration, and resolution of trade disputes before the World Trade Organization (WTO). He has represented private parties and governments in arbitration before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), as well as in ICC, UNCITRAL and AAA international arbitrations. He has also represented governments in WTO disputes. Mr. Alexandrov has served as an arbitrator in numerous cases. In addition to English and Bulgarian, he is fluent in French, Russian and Spanish.
Mr. Yang, who is resident in the firm’s Singapore office, regularly acts as counsel in international arbitrations and cross-border litigation, particularly on matters in the Greater China region, as well as Southeast Asia. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators and an accredited mediator. He has extensive experience acting for corporate clients in international arbitrations and complex commercial litigation, ranging from shareholders’ disputes, investment disputes, joint venture disputes and technology licensing disputes, FCPA investigations and compliance and regulatory issues. He also serves on the panels of all the major arbitration institutions in Asia, such as the Singapore International Arbitration Center, the China International Economic & Trade Arbitration Commission and the Hong Kong International Arbitration Center. Mr. Yang’s admissions in England and Wales, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong enable him to advise clients on their international disputes in a large number of jurisdictions. Mr. Yang is fluent in English and is a native speaker of Mandarin and speaks several other Chinese dialects, including Cantonese, Chiu Chow and Fujianese. He also has a good working knowledge of Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia.
The international commercial and treaty arbitration practice works closely with the firm’s international trade and complex commercial litigation practices. Daniel Price, who founded the firm’s international trade and treaty arbitration practices, returned to Sidley last year as Senior Partner for Global Issues after serving as Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs in the Administration of George W. Bush, and will continue working with the international arbitration team as counsel and arbitrator.
