HONG KONG--()--Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) Hong Kong Cyclothon 2024, a large-scale outdoor sports extravaganza, organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), drew to a pleasant close today (October 13). The cyclists had the unique opportunity to navigate through Hong Kong’s vibrant urban landscape and major roads on routes that were specially enhanced this year. On top of the cycling activities, the event was extended to non-cyclists with the first-ever “Cyclothon Carnival” at Wonderland in the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD). The new addition offered locals and tourists alike a multitude of engaging activities, including novel sports experiences, a sports-themed market, an art zone, a gourmet corner, active recovery and performances, and much more, allowing both cyclists and the general public to share the same active fun together.

Dr Pang Yiu-kai, HKTB Chairman, said, “The annual ‘SHKP Hong Kong Cyclothon’ is Hong Kong’s grandest and most extensive cycling celebration. The HKTB aspires to promote sports tourism through various sports mega events in town and establish Hong Kong as a sports and wellness tourism destination. This year, we elevated the overall experience with enhanced routes for the cyclists, while presenting the first Cyclothon Carnival in WKCD, open to both local participants and tourists to encourage a wider audience to enjoy our city’s sports mega events and get a taste of Hong Kong’s boundless energy.”

Mr Adam Kwok, Executive Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP), said, “SHKP is proud to be the title and charity sponsor of the Hong Kong Cyclothon for the seventh time. This event is a fantastic showcase to the world of Hong Kong’s beauty and vibrant culture. By embracing the ‘Sports for Charity’ ethos, we will donate the funds raised, along with additional donations from SHKP, to The Community Chest of Hong Kong.” Mr Kwok said this year’s exciting additions – four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome participating in the 50km ride and a new sports carnival – have transformed the event into a city-wide sports and wellness festival for residents and tourists alike.

Six major cycling events completed successfully

The day was packed with six cycling experiences and races. Routes for the two popular non-competitive events were elevated with new elements. Riders of the 50km Ride enjoyed a four-tunnel, three-bridge ride with the Sha Tin Heights Tunnel. Cyclists in the 32km Ride could enjoy Hong Kong’s scenic harbour view from the Ting Kau Bridge. Highlights of the day included the City Cycling Challenge around the Greater Bay Area (Hong Kong) – SHKP Men’s and Women’s Opens, in which Yip Shing-hei emerged victorious in the men’s category and Wu Wenmin clinched the top spot in the women’s division.

More than 20 elite leaders from various sectors participated in the CEO Charity and Celebrity Ride, united in their mission to promote the love of cycling throughout Hong Kong. All registration fees were donated to charity, in line with charitable spirit to help people in need. In another event, about 200 children aged six or above and their parents took part in the Family Fun Ride, basking in the joy of cycling amidst the vibrant Hong Kong cityscape.
