LEICESTER, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Students from De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester, UK, will be embarking on the trip of a lifetime this week as they jet off to experience life at one of three top Chinese universities.

Nine students from DMU were selected from more than 2000 applications for the Study China programme – a three-week government funded trip giving undergraduate students across the UK an introduction to the country.

As part of their trip the students will receive more than 40 hours of lessons in Mandarin and learn about the Chinese culture through activities including Tai Chi, calligraphy, and kite-making. Excursions such as archaeological digs and tours of local towns are another exciting feature of the students’ itinerary.

Reena Mistry, from Luton, is one of the nine students who has managed to secure a place on the programme and will be heading off to Zhejiang University in Hangzhou with fellow student Ankita Hathalia.

Reena, 19, who studies BA (Hons) Human Resource Management and Marketing, said: “To be accepted on to the programme is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. China’s business sector is huge so I am most looking forward to learning about their business values as I think this will stand me in good stead for my future career.”

More than 250 students from England have been picked for Study China, which will run from Sunday 10 April to Friday 29 April.

DMU students Mahir Darvesh, Simon Armstrong, Oliver Bowen and Babatunde Oladunjoye will be heading to Nanjing University. Nanjing University has recently signed a collaboration agreement with DMU to establish academic exchanges and boost research co-operation.

Mahir, 18, from Leicester, is studying the (BSc Hons) Economics and Government course at DMU and is most looking forward to learning about China’s culture, history and traditions.

He said: “It’s just about sunk in that I’m going this week. I am very excited, overwhelmed and grateful for the place on the Study China Programme.

“Just having the opportunity to learn about the country itself, and see first-hand how it has developed, and is developing, will be an amazing experience.”

Ahmad Teladia, Claire Payne and Olumide Adedokum will be undertaking their studies at Shandong University in Jinan.

Andy Gale, International Student Support Officer at DMU, said: “We’re delighted to hear that nine of our students have been selected for the Study China Programme – they’ve done really well given the popularity of the programme and the high number of applicants. I’m sure that this visit will give the group a valuable insight into the country and we wish them all a fantastic trip.”
