Sponsored by the KIC and the AAMA, “Managing Global Tax Operations” offers attendees in Shanghai, China an understanding of tax complexities and their relevance to doing business globally

BERWYN, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Vertex Inc., the leading provider of corporate enterprise tax solutions, today announced that a team of executives will present an educational seminar on tax complexities for Chinese business and governmental leaders on May 19, 2011 at the KIC Plaza, Yangpu, Shanghai, China.

The seminar titled, “Managing Global Tax Operations,” will offer an analysis from Vertex’s executive leadership of the current global tax environment, the associated operational and financial challenges for international companies and the technology and process improvements that can help address these challenges. Vertex’s president and chief executive officer, Jeff Westphal, will kick off the discussion, and offer insight into future trends and developments in tax and their effect on companies both in China and across the globe.

“While actual taxes, rules and regulations differ greatly around the world, their impact on companies knows no borders,” said Westphal. “From the ever changing tax rules and rates, to increased governmental scrutiny on collection and compliance, tax’s potential influence on corporate operations increases in step with global expansion. This concept is particularly timely for companies in China, as they look to grow into new regions and markets.”

Corporate Tax focuses on complying with a complicated array of tax requirements from federal, state, local and foreign tax authorities regarding tax calculations, filing returns, and audit defense, and also is responsible for planning tax strategy and supporting business decisions. The Corporate Tax function is typically part of the Finance department.

Westphal noted that as the world economy continues to recover from the global recession, it is clear that tax has taken on a new, increased role in both government and business.

“The current hyper-regulatory environment in global tax is among the most significant trends to emerge from the recession,” said Westphal. “It’s essential for any company with global ambitions to understand and navigate this environment effectively.”

Against the backdrop of the current and future trends in tax, Vertex’s chief technology officer, John Viglione, will offer perspective on both the current and future state of tax technology, and how companies are utilizing technology to manage global tax.

“It is important that companies take a strategic approach to managing global tax operations,” said Viglione. “This means addressing current requirements, as well as understanding future needs in tax administration, risk management and tax data management. For this reason, the most prudent global organizations develop a tax technology and process ‘roadmap’ that aligns with the company’s overall financial and operational strategy.”

In addition to offering an analysis of the overall global tax landscape, the seminar will also explore:

  • Tax trends and developments by country and region, including the U.S. and North America, European Union, Asia-Pacific and South America.
  • Specific taxes, including sales and use tax, value added tax (VAT), and the corporate tax provision and income tax process.
  • The tax ecosystem and how technology and process are used to measure, manage and monitor administration, risk and compliance.

“The seminar is part of Vertex’s global effort to educate both businesses and government on key tax and technology trends,” said Westphal. “It is an important first step in developing a working relationship between Vertex and business leaders in China. It’s an honor to meet with a group of prominent leaders in Shanghai who have a vested interest in understanding tax and its strategic role in corporate operations and expansion.”

The seminar is being co-sponsored by the Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) and the Asia America MultiTechnology Association (AAMA), with the assistance of Dr. Robert P. Lee, a professor in Entrepreneurship Practice at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Lee a 35-year veteran of the global high-tech industry, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the AAMA and a Board member of a number of companies, including Accela, Inc. and Achievo Corporation.

“As China continues to grow into new economic markets, it is valuable for its business leaders to understand the unique economic nuances and regulations of each country and region,” said Lee. “The seminar offered by Vertex will provide attendees with a new understanding of the impact of global tax at the corporate level.”
