TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that it will reinforce its power systems business in North America by merging three current businesses into a new company: the thermal and hydro power business operated by Toshiba International Corporation (TIC); the steam turbine and generator (STG) business for nuclear power systems operated by Toshiba America Nuclear Energy Corporation (TANE); and the STG business for nuclear power systems operated by Westinghouse Electric Company LLC (WEC), the U.S.-based group company of Toshiba Corporation that is the world’s leading commercial nuclear energy company. The new company, Toshiba America Energy Systems Corporation (TAES), will start operation on April 1, 2015. For nuclear energy applications, TAES will work closely with WEC.
TAES will provide customers with one-stop solutions by unifying the sales and services contact for STG business into a single company, removing the inconvenience of customers working with multiple contacts as at present. Integration of the strong North American sales network that TIC has cultivated in its thermal and hydro power business with the systematic design, procurement and construction expertise that TANE and WEC have developed in the nuclear business is expected to generate synergies that reinforce the STG business for new power plants, and the service and maintenance business for existing units, including other-OEM plants.
Commenting on the new organization, Mr. Shigenori Shiga, Corporate Executive Vice President of Toshiba Corporation, and President & CEO of Toshiba’s Power Systems Company, said: "This reorganization of key elements of Toshiba Group's power systems business in the US is a major step forward. A unified, focused organization will be more efficient and, most importantly, able to support our customers from planning through to maintenance services. I look to TAES, in cooperation with WEC, to promote and expand our business in North America.”
Toshiba Group is a major presence in the North American power generation market. It has supplied over 100 STGs for thermal and nuclear power plants, and also built up a comprehensive service, maintenance and support network with the 2007 acquisition of REGENCO LLC, a leader in STG maintenance, repair and refurbishment. This will give TAES a strategically located service center in Milwaukee that is positioned to provide customers with one-stop, comprehensive service solution.
